Okay, weird heading right? Haha
Bought myself a couple of dvds yesterday and when I asked the guys selling it whether or not it is clear as in the original dvds, they said yes.
Got home and watched the dvds then boom!

It was indeed clear. Indeed.

But hold on, I can't seem to be hearing clearly. I adjusted my speakers' volume. Same. Not enunciative enough. Okay fine. So I adjusted my speakers' level afterward, still the same. That's what you get when you bought pirated dvds, I said to myself. It's okay, I said again, I can always turn on the subtitle.

And I thought my Grammar sucks! I can do better than the translator. I can construct better sentence structures, used more suitable vocabularies and I am better at spelling them. Goodness mercy!

Yeah, that's what you get when you bought pirated dvds. It's cheaper, we all know that, and some privileged individuals would be fortunate enough to find the good ones. But trust me, the original might be more expensive but it's always better in quality. Besides, you will learn to appreciate it more.

Moral of the story, choose wisely. Better yet, buy the originals!

The Time I Learn How to Whistle

Back when I was a kid, I don't really have neighbours to play with. My elder brothers and sister were too grown up for me to play with so I usually play on my on. We do have neighbours actually but the nearest to go to took about 10 minutes.

Maybe I was tired of playing my soldier men and my lorry truck alone so I went to my neighbour's house to play with their kids. I brought all my toys with me and put it in my bag. When I reached my neighbour's house, I saw a few kids playing around the house. Smiling and laughing to each other. They stopped when the saw me. Kind enough, they asked me to join their game of police and thief.

A moment later, I think it was my friend's sister that interrupted us. She said, in her music class, she learn how to whistle and can whistle any song she wanted to. We were amazed as little children and try to whistle as well. None of us could and she try teaching us my showing us the placement of tongue and shaping of the lips, but still, no one can make a sound. She left us after a few minutes and we started playing the toys that I have.

It was late in the afternoon when I decided to go back. I was walking alone and suddenly remember the whistle lesson we have earlier so I begin to shape my lips and place my tongue correctly while walking home but I still couldn't produce any sound. I kept on trying. I can imagine how it feels like producing a tune with your lips and mouth. I could walk around with music of my own and I will not feel that lonely. I wanted to be able to whistle so bad.

I can see my house from a distance so I started to walk slower in pace. I started to forget that I was heading home but I was still walking. Remember how beautiful it was listening to my friend's sister whistle makes me wanted to try even harder. All the beautiful sounds you can make with your lips. It must be so nice. Then snap. I was actually day dreaming while walking.

But wait. I'm whistling. I am actually whistling. I can hear something from my mouth. I'm so happy that I smile to myself. A little excitement fills my whole body and I beginning to run. Then I stopped, shaping my lips and placing my tongue again, and blow. Nothing came out. Try again. Nothing.

I thought I could whistle. Which I did. I swear.
But I was disturbed by my own excitement.
I was not focused enough.
I lost it. Not until a few days later that I can really make up sound with my lips. But after trying and practicing really hard. My whistle are loud and clear now and I can make sound of any song.

This story might seems simple but the lessons and the values I have learned grew up with me and I remember every inch of it; how I learn to whistle...
Hehehe

Apa Maksud ‘Kerja Setengah Hari’ Seorang Cikgu?

Kecuali dia seorang guru, maka dia akan tahu apa maksud ‘kerja setengah hari’ dalam konteks seorang guru. Tapi sebagai seorang guru juga, saya tidak boleh menyalahkan sesiapa khususnya golongan bukan guru yang tidak faham konsep ini. Oleh yang demikian, saya dengan suka hati ingin mengongsikan konsep yang disalahtafsir oleh ramai orang. Kadang-kadang pedas juga telinga saya sebagai seorang warga pendidik bila dikatakan “kamu best.. kerja half day saja. Banyak lagi cuti tu ni. Elaun pun banyak juga”. Jadi, saya mintalah kepada semua agar dapat member perhatian dan membaca dengan teliti apa yang bakal saya tulis ini.

Setiap pegawai kerajaan tertakhluk kepada ‘core business’ ataupun paling senang kita dapat fahami adalah objektif kerja utama. Core business seorang guru adalah untuk mengajar pelajar. Itu adalah kerja utama kami. Sama seperti golongan polis, bomba, doktor, jururawat dan lain-lain lagi, setiap kita ada pelanggan kita masing-masing. Setiap golongan yang bekerja di bawah kerajaan ataupun swasta mempunyai masa untuk bertemu pelanggan, memberi perkhidmatan yang sewajarnya. Seorang doktor misalannya, mempunyai masa untuk melawat dan merawat pesakit. Begitu juga dengan pegawai keselamatan seperti bomba dan polis dan lain-lain lagi. Tapi sebagai seorang pegawai perkhidmatan pendidikan yakni guru, terdapat sedikit perbezaan dari segi praktis perkhidmatannya pelanggannya.

Pengiraan Waktu
Pelanggan utama seorang guru adalah pelajar. Seorang guru tidak berjumpa dengan pelajar secara individu tetapi secara berkumpulan. Mungkin, mungkin seorang jururawat melayani seseorang pesakit dalam tempoh 30 minit, setiap seorang. Ataupaun seorang pembaca meter elektrik rumah menghabiskan masa lebih kurang 15 minit untuk membaca meter untuk satu-satu rumah. Mungkin. Mungkin lebih, mungkin kurang. Itu andaian saya semata-mata tetapi hakikatnya, kita sebagai pegawai perkhidmatan akan memperuntukkan sejumlah masa untuk pelanggan kita. Berbalik kepada guru, setiap pelajar juga diberikan masa untuk menerima perkhidmatan daripada guru. Berapa masa yang diperuntukkan? Untuk satu-satu subjek misalannya Bahasa Inggeris, ada sekolah yang memperuntukkan 30 minit, 35 minit, 40 minit dan 45 minit bergantung kepada kesesuaian dan situasi sekolah. Mari kita kira sama-sama. Kalau kita ada lebih kurang 30 pelajar dalam satu kelas, berapa masa untuk kita peruntukkan untuk satu pelajar? Kita bahagi (saya ambil contoh satu masa adalah 40 minit sebab 40 minit adalah masa yang paling sedikit yang sepatutnya diperuntukkan untuk satu-satu subjek dalam satu masa *bergantung kepada sekolah atas kes-kes khas*. Okay, jadi macam ni. 40 minit dibahagi kepada 30 orang pelajar sama dengan lebih kurang 1 minit 3 saat untuk seseorang pelajar. Masa seorang guru melayani seseorang pelajar adalah 1 minit 3 saat untuk satu-satu masa! Seorang pegawai bank di bahagian kaunter pun memerlukan masa yang lebih untuk membuat transaksi.

Dalam masa seminggu, satu subjek teras seperti Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Inggeris, Matematik, Sejarah, Sains, Pendidikan Agama Islam ataupun Pendidikan Moral *sekolah menengah dan bergantung kepada jurusan pelajar*, 200 minit seharusnya diperuntukkan untuk guru bersama pelajar di dalam kelas. Dalam satu-satu masa, satu masa untuk satu mata pelajaran akan diajar 40 minit untuk single period dan 80 minit untuk double period. Matematiknya senang sahaja iaitu perkiraan sama seperti di atas. Apa yang saya hendak katakan di sini adalah, pelajar dikumpulkan menjadi satu kumpulan untuk menerima perkhidmatan; 40 minit untuk 30 orang pelajar. Berapa masa yang diperlukan oleh seorang jururawat melayani 30 orang pesakit?

Setiap guru juga mempunyai masa tertentu di dalam jadual, mungkin dalam 20 – 30 masa setiap minggu *bergantung kepada jawatan-jawatan yang dipegang oleh seseorang guru*. 40 minit adalah jumlah minit untuk satu-satu masa dan sekiranya guru mempunyai 27 masa, 40 didarabkan dengan 27 adalah bersamaan dengan 1080 minit setiap minggu! Sedikit? Ingin saya jelaskan, itu adalah masa masa untuk seseorang cikgu bersama pelajar di dalam kelasnya. Di dalam kelas.

Kerja Rumah
Selepas balik dari sekolah dengan membawa buku-buku pelajar, berapa pula tempoh masa yang akan dihabiskan oleh seseorang guru memeriksa buku-buku tersebut? Seseorang guru mungkin mempunya lebih dari 5 kelas untuk di ajar dan setiap kelas itu mempunyai 30 orang pelajar. Buku-buku yang harus disemak? Okay, secara jujur saya katakan, saya pernah meminta pelajar memeriksa sendiri buku mereka sekiranya itu adalah soalan objektif yakni soalan-soalan A, B, C dan D ataupun soalan Ya/Tidak ataupun Betul/Salah. Tapi bagaimana pula dengan soalan esei ataupun soalan subjektif? Tanyalah guru Bahasa Melayu ataupun guru Pendidikan Agama Islam ataupun guru Pendidikan Moral, Sejarah, Geografi dan lain-lain lagi. Kalau mahu mendengar keluhan yang lebih ‘kick’ lagi, tanyalah Guru Bahasa Inggeris! Membawa balik buku-buku pelajar ke rumah dan bersengkang mata memeriksa hampir setiap malam. Salah periksa sedikit, maka datanglah ibu bapa daripada golongan-golongan berpendidikan tinggi, contohnya, memerli kami, menghina kami. Kami terima kerana kami tahu, kami pun boleh melakukan kesilapan. Kami juga manusia.

Aktiviti Kokum
Aktiviti Ko-kurikulum ataupun Kokum adalah wajib untuk setiap pelajar. Aktiviti Kokum terbahagi kepada 3; Unit beruniform seperti Pengakap, PBSM. Unit Sukan dan Permainan seperti Sukan Badminton, Bola Sepak dan Unit Akademik seperti Persatuan Sejarah, Bahasa Melayu. Ada juga sekolah yang mempunyai Persatuan lain seperti Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya, Kelab Pencinta Alam, Kelab Koir dan Kebudayaan dan banyak lagi. Aktiviti Kokum ini tidak boleh dilakukan pada sesi P&P (Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran) kecuali atas sebab-sebab tertentu. Aktiviti harus dijalankan pada waktu petang untuk sesi pagi dan pada waktu pagi untuk sesi petang. Ada sekolah yang terpaksa menjalankan aktiviti ini pada hujung minggu. Kerja separuh hari? Sehingga ada guru yang sendiri menjadi takut – anak orang dijaga penuh, anak aku?

Kerja Pengkeranian
Keluhan yang sering didengar daripada warga pendidikan adalah bertambahnya kerja-kerja pengkeranian di samping kerja-kerja selaku seorang guru. Kerja-kerja pengkeranian ini termasuklah membuat laporan akademik, membuat pelan strategik, kursus, minit mesyuarat dan lain-lain lagi. Iya, kami mengeluh kerana terdapat seperti pembahagian waktu sehingga kadang-kadang kami tidak dapat menyediakan RPH (Rancangan Pengajaran Harian) yang betul-betul berkesan; Antara menjadi seorang guru yang mengajar dan seorang kerani yang menyediakan dokumentasi untuk semuanya. Tapi kami beradaptasi. Kami terima dan kami masih boleh melakukannya. Kebanyakkan kerja-kerja pengkeranian ini kami buat di rumah, di luar waktu persekolahan. Sekali lagi, kerja separuh hari?

Saya bukannya hendak melaga-lagakan profesion mana yang lebih banyak kerjanya, ataupun yang lebih susahnya. Saya hanya ingin menerangkan bahawa kerja separuh hari bagi seorang cikgu tidak sama seperti kerja separuh hari pekerjaan-pekerjaan yang lainnya. Kita harus memahami bahawa setiap pekerjaan di dunia ini adalah pekerjaan yang memberikan perkhidmatan. Setiap pekerjaan adalah memenatkan. Semua pekerjaan adalah penting. Semua pekerjaan ada peranan masing-masing. Cuma saya bercakap sebagai seorang guru. Yang paling nyata, guru memberikan perkhidmatan kepada pelajar secara padat yakni berjumpa dengan semua pelajar sekaligus. Masa itu dipadatkan akibatnya, bila sesi P&P habis, guru harus memeriksa tahap kefahaman pelajar dengan cara, antaranya, kerja rumah. Memang tidak semua guru itu sempurna ilmunya atau tidak pun layak bergelar seorang cikgu tapi sama juga kes dengan pekerjaan yang lain. Kita juga mempunyai polis yang makan rasuah, pegawai bank yang tidak amanah dan banyak lagi. Saya hanya meminta agar masyarakat dapat lebih memahami pekerjaan seorang guru dan tidak bersikap judgemental tanpa kefahaman yang betul. Sedih juga bila terdengar khabar-khabar yang menyakitkan telinga oleh seorang jururawat yang tidak mendengar dan membaca bajet yang diumumkan oleh Perdana Menteri secara teliti baru-baru ini. Yang paling menakutkan pula apabila ada segolongan pihak yang terus menyokong komen jururawat itu tanpa memeriksa dahulu sahih tidaknya tuduhan itu. Bacalah dulu dan telitikan baik-baik.

Dan cuti panjang? Mungkin pada post yang lain, saya akan bercerita tentang ini. Apa maksud cuti panjang untuk seseorang guru. Mungkin saya silap atas penghuraian saya di atas, mohon diperbetulkan oleh rakan-rakan guru yang lain, tapi ini adalah apa yang saya lalui sebagai seorang guru. Pada satu masa nanti, bila melihat seorang cikgu yang balik kerja pada jam 1 petang ataupun 3 petang, ataupun 6 petang, renung-renungkanlah apa yang sudah warga pendidikan tinggalkan dalam diri kita masing-masing. Serinsim Waterfall, Kota Marudu, Sabah

One of the Guest in my chatbox complained that the people of Kota Marudu boast on the existence of a so-call Sorimsim Waterfall but never really sees in photos of the actually waterfall. On behalf of Kota Marudu, I would like to extend my apology for not posting any photos of the waterfall. Yes, it does exist and it's really beautiful. I've been there myself. But alas, forgive me again because, I do have the photos but during my last visit there, I was till using the film camera and I don't really know where I put the printed photos of the waterfall. I'm sorry if you can't find any photos of the water fall (since you said you google-d it the whole day) but I remember a clip made by some tourism students regarding the journey up to the waterfall. Please check the link that I have included here for your viewing pleasure. Next time I'm there, I will take as many photos as I can to promote the place.

Si Katak Puru dan Si Katak Hijau

Si Katak Puru dan Si Katak Hijau mungkin sudah lama berkawan. Bagi mereka, persahabatan adalah sesuatu yang kekal. Berbanding dengan percintaan, mereka menganggap persahabatan adalah sesuatu yang lebih tahan lama.

Mungkin juga kerana terjadi sesuatu yang tidak disangka, si Katak Puru dan si Katak Hijau tiba-tiba tertarik menjadi lebih daripada sekadar sahabat. Sebenarnya, sudah lama juga mereka menyimpan perasaan antara satu sama yang lain.

Pada suatu hari, Si Katak Puru berjumpa dengan Si Katak Hijau kerana kebetulan Si Katak Hijau menziarah keluarganya di tempat si Katak Puru mencari makan. Mereka sangat gembira kerana dapat berjumpa dan menghabiskan masa bersama-sama bercerita mengenai perjalanan hidup masing-masing. Kemudian si Katak Puru tiba-tiba seraya berkata:

- Lama sudah kita tidak jumpakan?
- Nda juga lamalah. Kenapa, ko rindu sama saya?

Terkejut sedikit si Katak Puru sebab ternyata dia sebenarnya rindukan si Katak Hijau dalam diam-diam.

- Kalila - balas si Katak Puru dengan berani.
- Betulba? - tanya si Katak Hijau, mencari penjelasan.

Si Katak Puru tiba-tiba menjadi malu. Dia tidak sangka yang dia sudah terlepas kata.

- Rindula ba, kawankan - jelas si Katak Puru sambil memandang ke tempat lain.

Si Katak Hijau datang menghampiri si Katak Puru.

- Saya pun ba... selalu ingat-ingat ko ni. Tapi, entalah, kenapa macam tidak berani mo cakap.

Si Katak Puru sangat terkejut dengan luahan di Katak Hijau. Suasana diam tiba-tiba.

- Ko ada perasaan sama saya ka ni Katak Puru? - Tiba-tiba si Katak Hijau memecahkan kesunyian. - Sebab, saya terus terangla, saya memang suka sama ko ni - tambahnya lagi.

Si Katak Puru terus diam. Sebenarnya, dia pun sudah menyimpan perasaan terhadap si Katak Hijau sejak dari dulu lagi.

- Siapalah saya ini wahai Katak Hijau? Ko tingu sajala saya ini. Layakkah pigi suka-suka katak macam ko?

- Eh, kenapa ko cakap begitu? Kita sudah lama kawan bah.

- Itulah pasal. Lebih bagus kita kawan-kawan saja. Ko bukan tidak tahu pengalaman hidup saya. Sampai sekarang macam masih takut-takut lagi mo sayang-sayang orang ini. Ko pun ada pengalaman yang sama. Tapi, ko lain. Ko cantik. Ko halus. Dari jauh lagi katak-katak lain sudah nampak ko. Ko tingulah saya ini. - panjang ulasan si Katak Puru.

- Kenapa ko cakap begini ni? Itu hati ba kita mo tingu. Bukan rupa bentuk semata-mata.

- Iya, saya tahu juga tu Katak Hijau tapi kita logikla ba kan. Kita sudah cakap dari dulu lagi, persahabatan tu kekal lebih lama dan buli jadi sampai selama-lamanya. Jadi, kita janganlah cakap soal perasaan antara kita. Ko tau juga kita ni memang saling sayang menyayangi dari dulu sebagai sahabat.

Si Katak Hijau terdiam, melontar pandangan jauh-jauh. Menghela nafas panjang.

Sudah beberapa hari berlalu sejak kepulangan si Katak Hijau ke tempat asalnya. Si Katak Puru diam-diam saja menanggung rindu. Kata si Katak Hijau kepada si Katak Puru sebelum bergerak pulang:

- Kalau kita tidak cuba, mungkin kita tidak tau. Mungkin kita lebih bahagia. Tapi sebenarnya sekarang pun kita sudah bahagia bah kan. Jadi, bagus lagila kali kita begini saja. Tapi ko simpan dalam hati sajalah yang saya sebenarnya kadang-kadang, mengharapkan hubungan kita ni lebih daripada sahabat saja.

Si Katak Puru duduk diam-diam menunggu makanan.

- Iya, sa suka ko dan mo jadi lebih daripada sahabat juga - kata si Katak Puru.

Tapi tidak sehingga di Katak Hijau sudah hilang dari pandangan. Lagipun, tiada siapa juga yang dapat dengar luahan si Katak Puru sebab si Katak Puru cuma berbisik di dalam hatinya sendiri.

Sitting On That Chair

I have always known that I want to be a teacher. When I was finally posted as a teacher in SMK Langkon, Kota Marudu, I thank God, thank my family, thank my mother, thanked everyone who has been there through my journey as a student until I have achieve my sole ambition. But when I was 'promoted' to being the English Language Officer of the District, that's when I think my career path takes another shift. It took my two weeks to actually think whether or not I accept the post. Well, eventually I did. Here I am now, acting and trying so hard to be one.

I am writing today for a specific group of people and of course to all of you, my readers, if any. This group of people are my friends. They are my respected teachers. Not just ordinary teachers but teachers of English Language. In Sabah, talking about my district, English Language has always been a killer subject but that doesn't mean that we, the English Teachers, are not working hard. We were and are working very hard. Always been and always will be.

Dear Friends,
I understand your predicament. I know you guys had been working hard. To add to all that hustle and bustle, I came in to the picture, adding huge amount of works and assignments, with a due date! I understand that crystal clear. Sitting on this chair now, I received soft and harsh complaints. Believe me, I looked deep into your complaints, not once I ignored any. It's a process of learning and of course, it is a room for improvement. Yes, sometimes, I wish that you are in my shoes and sitting on the very chair I am sitting now, you will understand my side of the predicament that you think belongs to only you. So I am truly, deeply, sincerely apologize for all the wrong doings, all the unkind words that I might have uttered stupidly, all the bad gestures too. On top of all, I am sorry that you have to do a lot of works. But just like you, I was only following orders, do what we're told to do. There's nothing much I can do but to accomplish the responsibility given. But we are teachers. No. Sorry. We are English Teachers and multitasking is what we do best! We are THAT good!

I am sure you have heard that I am leaving the office soon. Yes, what you have heard is indeed true and that 'soon' is actually this weekend. Today is my last day and I'll be going for 2 years. Please don't ask who is going to replace me, although I might know who. Please continue all the good work that you are currently doing now. Whoever is going to replace me, please give your co-operation just like you had given me. It has been fun and educating working with all of you and I hope we can work again in the coming future. I wish all of you the best of luck and God Bless.

Student: Kakak sa duktur, abang sa lecturer ajar pasal hutan. Adik sa sana MRSM sekarang. Sa sini2 ja.

Saya: (diam sekejap berpikir sambil tingu-tingu sekeliling) .. Kadai ko ka ni?

Student: Iya cikgu. Ini saja yang sa pandai buat.

Saya: Kakak ko pernah minta nasihat pasal pc?

Student: Ada. Dia selalu kol tu tanya apa2 pasal computer.

Saya: Abang ko?

Student: Dia tu pandai tapi kalau mo kasi cantik2 presentation powerpoint dia selalu sa yang dia suruh tu.

Found this link and although it's still a blur on what was the cause of the riot and what they were trying to achieve, I know that it's chaotic in the UK now. My prayers goes to all the innocent families, all the loss and all the tragic happenings.

A Day's Thought

I wish they would stop. Just stop. Just stop thinking that this is easy on me. Because I won't be gone for a long time. Because it's fully paid. Because it's a scholarship.

The truth of the matter is, this is not easy.
Personal loan, car loan, housing loan. Not to mention the new environment. And, they don't even know what full salary means? I just need someone to sit with me and try to understand what I am on now. Leaving what I am used to here. My mom, my family, friends and love ones. I am still thinking whether or not I am going to bring Nedelicious along but, I guess a day's thought is a day's thought.

I just wish people would try to be more understanding. That's all.

-Ko tingu ba tu urang tua. Punya kesian.

Si Dan melihat sekejap. Seorang tua berjalan perlahan melintasi gerai kami. Dengan selamba, sambil memikul bag pack hitam yang usang.

- Kalau saya tu, nda saya kasi bapa sa jalan-jalan seturang begitu. Sudahlah bertungkat saja.

- Ada bah kali anak-anak dia berjalan-jalan di sekitar sini. Si Dan cuba membetulkan cara fikir saya.

- Yalah, tapi janganla ba kasi biar bapa derang berjalan-jalan begitu seturang. Kesianlabah.

Di depan kami, seorang lelaki tua yang rambutnya sudah putih malah jarang-jarang sudah, bertongkat kaki empat. Entah apa nama tongkat begitu. Berjalan perlahan sambil memerhati keadaan sekeliling. Berhenti sekali-sekali, mungkin mengambil nafas. Orang belum ramai lagi jadi kami dapat melihat lelaki tua itu berjalan perlahan melintasi booth kami kemudian berjalan lagi sehingga hilang dari pandangan. Matahari mula menunjukkan kuasanya.

- Adoi, punya ramai orang ni... Panas lagi. Saya mengeluh sambil mengipas muka.
- Ko tingu ba tu urang tua tadi... Si Dan tiba-tiba menegur saya. - Ko tingu apa dia pigang?

Saya memerhati. Lelaki tua yang pagi tadilah. Sekarang sudah memegang plastik warna merah yang besar. Dia perlahan-lahan melintasi booth kami sekali lagi. Tapi pelanggan terlalu ramai. Tidak dapat tengok sangat lelaki tua itu.

- Nah, ko tingu apa lagi dia pigang tu. Si Dan tiba-tiba menegur saya lagi.

Lelaki tua itu, buat kali ketiga, berjalan perlahan sekali lagi melintasi booth kami. Berjalan santai. Perlahan. Dengan tambahan satu lagi beg plastik besar ditangan.

Kali ini, saya melihat dengan perlahan juga....

Sedangkan dia berjalan di tengah panas, perlahan, bertongkat sambil memegang dua beg plastik besar, dengan bag pack hitam di belakang lagi, saya, di bawah khemah yang dilindungi dari pancaran matahari, mengeluh kepanasan dan kepeluhan dan kepenatan, seakan sangat tidak logik bila melihat situasi lelaki tua itu berbanding saya. Dia berjalan perlahan seperti mahu menunjukkan sesuatu. Kemudian hilang di kalangan banyak orang.

Terus saya bangun dari tempat duduk:
"t-shirt buliba kalau kau.. beg.. keychain... sticker... buliba kalau kau!"

Suatu Hari Baru-baru ini...

Panasnya hati saya bila kereta di depan tidak bergerak-gerak sedangkan lampu trafik suda hijau.

Kalau bukan sebab terlupa handphone di rumah, manalah saya akan buat U-turn balik, memecut sehingga 140. Rupanya stuck depan traffic light lagi. Sudahlah aliran traffic jam lebih kurang 500m jauhnya, sampai sahaja satu kereta sebelum traffic light, tidak pula bergerak-gerak kereta yang satu tu di depan.

-Apahal lagi ni? Bisik saya sendiri.

-Kalau rosak, sudah lebih kurang 5 minit tidak keluar pun dari kereta. Biasanya, kalau kereta rosak, tuan punya kereta akan keluar, buka bonet enjin, tanda kereta rosak. Ini tidak pun. Fikir saya lagi. Rasa panas mula menguasai diri.

Kereta di belakang pun tidak berhenti hon. Sudah. Habis. Naik 1000% amarah sebab flight akan berlepas dalam masa 40 minit lagi! Panik.

Saya keluar dari kereta dengan lancarnya menuju ke kereta di depan. MyV SE Auto. Dengan marahnya berkata:

-Bos, kenapa tidak jalan-jalan lagi ni?! Orang mahu cepat! Tengok kereta di belakang! Saya berkata separuh menjerit sambil menoleh ke belakang, melihat kereta-kereta yang terstuck.

- Minta maaf encik. Kaki saya kebas tiba-tiba... Minta maaf encik. Saya betul-betul tidak sengaja.

Seorang lelaki dalam lingkungan 50-an keluar dari kereta sambil menyumpah-nyumpah dirinya.

Tangan kirinya kudung. Kaki kirinya kudung.

A guide to West Malaysians for Sabahans

JUNE 1 — Since I have written a guide for West Malaysians about Sarawak, perhaps it is only fair I write about Sabah. But writing “Sabah 101” seemed boring so I flipped it around and now here’s a handy reference for Sabahans dealing with the influx of West Malaysians thanks to AirAsia.

1. Most West Malaysians really don’t remember September 16, 1963, and when asked, will only remember that “Malaysia gained its independence in 1957.” Don’t blame them; blame our badly-written history textbooks. Incidentally, they were written by West Malaysians.

2. West Malaysian Muslims are a lot more uptight than the ones in Sabah. If you take them to a soto stall that is situated outside a Chinese coffee shop, don’t be offended if they refuse to eat in fear of the food not being halal (kosher). If they are Malay and Muslim, make sure the eatery has a halal signboard.

3. Expect them to be very nosy about what race or religion you are. If you happen to look Chinese but greet them with the Muslim salam or you look Malay and are eating pork in front of them, prepare for either looks of shock or ones of taking offence. West Malaysians seem to get offended easily, for some reason. (Proof can be found in the comments of my columns, funnily enough written by people in West Malaysia)

4. Some of them will ask really stupid questions. Just smile and blame, again, our education system. What else are they supposed to think when the only references to Sabah and Sarawak in textbooks are usually illustrated by pictures of natives in traditional costumes?

5. Even if they have landed in Kota Kinabalu, they might still forget that Kuching is not in Sabah. Resist urge to make fun of their poor grasp of geography. Besides, that’s my job.

6. They can’t even get tapai and tuak straight either. So if they ask you for the latter, smile and suggest they look for the heady beverage in Sarawak. Say it gently, remember point three and five.

7. Also, a lot of West Malaysians regard tapai as a sour-smelling delicacy made out of either rice or tapioca. So if the nice Malay makcik enquires about tapai, she probably means that and not the locally beloved alcoholic beverage. Drunken Malay makciks are not pretty sights.

8. Put up with their griping about the need for immigration controls. And their whining about not being allowed to come and go in Sabah as they please. Remind them of the 20-point agreement. Make a joke about us being afraid they’ll come in and take all our timber. Then add, “Haha, but you already did!” Enjoy the peaceful silence.

9. They will also express shock at how rustic Kota Kinabalu is compared to Sabah. Just shrug and say that whatever money Sabah makes from oil and its natural resources all go to the federal revenue. Also that more than half of the people living below the poverty line come from Sabah.

10. If they ask why East Malaysians like to drink a lot and even make it part of our culture, remind them of point nine.

11. West Malaysians cannot quite work their head around the many tribes in Sabah as the local propaganda and tourism paraphernalia in West Malaysia make it seem like most Malaysians are generally Malay, Chinese or Indian. Again, our education system sucks. As does our information ministry.

12. West Malaysians from rural areas are really sheltered, and thanks to that, are prone to saying stupid things. One example: “The Greg Typhoon in Sabah was caused by sinful Sabahans having wild parties and the storm was God’s punishment.” I was told this by a pious Malay girl from Kedah. Refrain from punching said people in the mouth. They really don’t know any better and also read too much Mastika.

13. For some reason, people from West Malaysia think Harian Metro, Mastika and Utusan print truth and not fiction.

So be gentle with our fellow Malaysians from the peninsula. Sabah and Sarawak have long been a distant mystery, the cash cows and fixed deposit of the federal government. Now that West Malaysians are beginning to realise that we are just as civilised as they are, they might not take us quite as much for granted.

But it’s still fun making fun of them.

- I just needed some fresh air. It's too 'happy' in my house now. My two elder brothers and their families are staying with us for a few days this weekend.
- That's great. You can play with the kids. I know you love them so much.
- Not until they disturb you while you were sleeping. And there;s always shouting here and there in my house now. Not to mention the cries, the jumping here and there. I can't stand the noise. The babies were crying sometimes until midnight and woke up pretty early.
- Ya, me too. I mean, not that I don't like it but it's just too much sometimes.
- Don't get me wrong. I love my family. Love my brothers. Their families...

- Why?
- Same reason as yours. Can't stand it.

I grinned. He smiles. Blowing the smoke from his mouth. Nodding too.

I burst out laughing.

Hector and the Search for Happiness by François Lelord

If you know me personally, you will know that I love to read. I started reading since I was 5 and the Library has always been a very fun place for me. Over the years though, I don't really spend much time in the Library but the habit of reading continues and right now, I have various collection of books, fiction and non-fiction, self-help book, history, spiritual gospel etc. Often, I will share my opinion on the book that I have read and today, I will discuss a little bit on the above heading.

A few weeks ago, I bought myself a book a cute blue book entitle Hector and the Search for Happiness. It was written by a French psychiatrist.

The Book:
Hector, I would say, a complicated person, who likes to help people, and he works as a psychiatrist. During his work, he come to know that many of his patients, are not really sick but are just not satisfied and unhappy with their lives. As a psychiatrist, he is obligated to find ways to help them and this begins to be rather a question for himself too. When one of his patients tells him he looks like he needs a good holiday, Hector did just that. While travelling, he is going to search for what makes people happy and whether there is some secret in obtaining it. He traveled to few countries, met old and new friends, and maybe love (Hector is an engaged man), experience life at its, I have to say, little happy-down way, but finally came out with 23 tips of Happiness.

My Say:
It's a very simple and easy to understand book. Choices of words are sometimes weird but still understandable. While reading the book, I don't really have trouble in relating myself to it. For me, it's a 'slow' book, not that it's boring but, it's one of those book that you would read before you go to bed. It's more to a help book then a novel; it reminds me of Robin Sharma somehow. But, if it so happen to be made to a movie, it's definitely going to be a box office.

If I were to rate this book, I would give 3.5 from 5.

The Story Behind The Song

The producers of American Idol have become very savvy with releasing music throughout each season in order to capture potential sales as quickly as possible. In season 10, American Idol took that strategy to a new level by releasing a single for a contestant who didn't even make it to the Top 24.

When Losing is a Winning Situation

Chris Medina was anointed an early favorite for American Idol season 10 in the auditions when he sang for the judges in Milwaukee. Not only did Chris Medina sing well enough to get through, but he also won over the judges and the audience with the story of his fiance's accident and slow recovery. However, once Hollywood week began, Chris Medina seemed to get lost in the middle of the pack with some less-than-stellar performances. While many viewers may have been surprised that Chris Medina didn't make it through to the Top 24, even Jennifer Lopez could not argue with not putting him through.

In past seasons, an elimination prior to the Top 12 meant that a contestant was on their own to pursue a recording contract, but season 10 of American Idol saw the introduction of Jimmy Iovine. Not only did Jimmy Iovine help with the contestants personally, he also brought along his own team of writer/producers, including hitmaker Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, known for his work with artists like Brandy, Beyonce as well as Britney Spears. Inspired by Chris and his finace's story, he wrote "What Are Words" and recorded it a few days after Chris was eliminated from American Idol.

When Good Isn't Good Enough

At the heart of "What Are Words" are lyrics inspired by things Chris Medina said and did during the audition and Hollywood week portions of the show. When Chris Medina sings "what kind of guy would I be/if I was to leave when you need me most," that lyric came straight from his own mouth when describing his dedication to helping his fiance Juliana ovecome the injuries sustained in her car accident.

My Note

I love this song simply because of it's story, simply because it represents the meaning of true love. He even appeared on Jay Leno's Show. I wish Chris all the best in his singing career and hope that his fiancee, although chances are little but no, it's not impossible, will be better soon.

The Password

She said that I would know her laptop's password. How should I know?
- Why can't you just guess?
- Why can't you just tell me?
- There's no fun in that.
- Look, I admire your sense of humour. But no fun here. I have to do some typing and emailing asap!

If it's not for my clumsiness, I wouldn't have forgotten my laptop inside my car, which my brother had just borrowed a few hours ago. When I called him, he said that he's in Tamparuli, that's about 80 minutes from where I am standing now.

And I am actually at a friend's house to help her do some preparation for her parents' 30th anniversary, God bless them, but I really need to use her laptop right away. I'm the earliest amongst the friends that she had invited to help her, she's the only child in the family, and I'm stuck with her two adorable parents.

- Please, I need to use your laptop right now.
- It's in my room.
- It's in my hand.
- You didn't?!
- Sorry but this is very urgent.
No, actually, I asked her mom to get it for me.

The Lady

So yesterday, while I was busy doing my office work, a lady came to our office. Round cute face with thin make-up and a very sassy smell, it lingers the whole room. Dimple smile, quite a view, I should say. Some glance a little then continue doing their job, while some, their glancing turned into staring. Me? I was busy doing my office work, remember? Or was it?

Actually, I saw this lady earlier when I went back from lunch. She was talking to one of the staff. It turns out that she is an Insurance Agent. Too bad I already have an Insurance Plan of my own, if not, maybe I could talk to this lady or something.

She approached one of my colleague which is at the front line of the office, damn you I said quietly, and he offered a sit to her. And they you have it. The most ridiculous show ever. The flirting is one thing and the 'I'm the man' is one thing.

But wait. She kept on looking and smiling at me. What happened? I asked myself. Trying hard to focus, I can't help myself so have a sneak look at her every now and then. Then it happened. My colleague realized that I was looking at them and he asked the girl:

- Do you know anybody here?
- Yes, I do. I know that guy over there. Pointing at me.
- And who is he? I was anxious.
- He's my brother.

Gosh, no wonder she looks so familiar!

The Gift

Yesterday, after I got home from work, my niece approached and said to me:
- Uncle, look at this. A gift from Owen to Dedeh.
- Who's Owen?
- Anty Wendy's son.

I see an orange bag in a paper bag.

- Why did he give Dedeh a gift?
- They are couple now.

Not a new thing to me but a bit disturbing when you come to think about it. First, Dedeh is another niece of mine which is just 11 years old and Owen is too. Second, where did he get the bag from? Or the money to buy it? I'm a bit nowhere. I know the fact that they started early these years, yes.I remember my crush when I was 7. My English Teacher.

Then I glanced at the bag. More like a hand bag.
Maybe Owen stole it from his mother? Or stole it from any where. Who knows? Or maybe, he bought it with his own money. Again, who knows?

I saw my sister-in-law passed me by and said nothing about it. Then I continued watching TV.

In the kitchen, my mom said funnily, "they are just kids".

I am In A Strange Room

Are You Your New Zodiac?

The horror of switching from Gemini to Taurus had people rushing to the Web for answers, sending searches for "zodiac signs" into the stratosphere.

So has your sign changed? Probably not. But it all depends on what kind of astrology you follow. Let us explain.

It may come as a surprise that there are different branches of astrology. A main Eastern form, for example, called Sidereal astrology, looks to the background stars, those famous constellations, as its guide.

Western astrology -- which uses the zodiac -- has its signs fixed to the seasons. Most Westerners, and all those horoscope pages we eagerly check, go by the zodiac. These signs follow what early astrologers called star signs, whose reference points are the tropics that form a ring around the earth. The zodiac is based on our relationship to the sun, not the stars.

The back story: About 2,000 years ago, the astrological signs and the astronomical ones were the same. But not anymore. The locations of the signs are based on the sun's location on the first day of spring. That location in the sky has slowly drifted westward because of something called "precession" -- the earth continually wobbles (a scientific term for a slight motion) every 26,000 years. Since the constellations were first identified, they have shifted some 30 degrees. Translation: The signs have slipped about a month westward, relative to the stars.

What this means to you: If you follow astrology that is linked to the constellations, your sign would go from say, a Gemini to a Taurus. You could even have a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, which you may have read about.

"It's a huge point of confusion for the public," says Bing Quock, assistant director of Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. For those who follow Western astrology, "astrologers are not talking about the constellations at all. When an astrologer says the sun is in a certain sign, they're talking about the sign, the location relative to the equinox. They're not talking about the location of the constellations. "

In short, if you follow the Sidereal astrology, the Eastern branch, your sign may have shifted. (And most likely, no surprise to you at all: This news is hundreds of years old).

But for the rest of us, our horoscope, and our signs, are still the same.

And I know, people would be reading their 'new' zodiac to know more about oneself now. Are you your new Zodiac or still the old one? I know I don't live by the Zodiac but it's always nice to read something that triggers your mind and your soul, isn't?

You taught me responsibility and care and you have brought me to many places; places I've never been to. We went through many good and bad times together. I was browsing 1Borneo with my girl friend the other day and went out with a pinkish book in my holding. She bought a comic book while I ended up with ROJAK by Amir Muhammad.

I will not describe the book in details but I will sum my thoughts of the book.

Superb. Hillarious. Educating. Handsome.

Go and buy this book you bookworms!

And those who doesn't really like to read, maybe you might want to start by reading page 8 of ROJAK. 'Mosque Slippers' which geniusly putted as the first of 60 short stories in the book is really a good appetizer. Some usage of vocabulary might 'amazed' you in a way, sentence structures varied from easy to advance, with Malaysian English which bombarded my thinking with simple little illustrations here and there, overseeing the assistance of understanding.

Frankly speaking, I don't understand and I can't really relate to all stories, most probably because it's written by context, but it's okay. I have had a fantastic time reading ROJAK. And I don't mind starting a 2nd cycle. Amir Muhammad, I like you.

Got To Find The Way

Life hadn't been easy for me these past few months. With my new working environment, new colleagues and new hour of working (unlike), I suddenly find myself in the midst of regrets and desperation. You see, I used to love going to work and no matter how hard and how up-the-sleeve I was, I'm still happy with what I was doing but it turns 360 degrees now. Work is not a fun thing anymore. Now, I don't like to talk about it. I don't like to tell people about it. I don't even like to wake up in the morning thinking about working.

It's almost 6 months now and I still can't get the hang of it but I know I have to stop. I know that I have to find a way to make my life works again. I don't have to enjoy what I'm doing. I don't have to like what I have to face everyday because that's life. It's not only about orange and apple and mango and strawberry. It could also be a sour pineapple (for the record, I like pineapple). I have to find that small path to and journey to it in search of that spark of light to make it better again. I have to. And if I don't, I promise to work even harder in fulfilling my job and whatever I am doing now. I will not fail.

And Christmas is at the corner. I still don't know what I want for Christmas (like someone is going to give it me) but I hope eventually I find it. I have my family and my relatives and my friends and some money to spend; God is kind to me.

And if you are searching for me, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere ... sigh ...

Sedih dan Marah - Kes Pembunuhan Nurse Hospital Kudat

Semalam saya terbaca artikel tentang kehilangan seorang wanita pada hari Sabtu yang bekerja sebagai nurse di hospital Kudat dalam Daily Express bertarikh 11 Oktober 2010. Rasa simpati terhadap keluarga masih lagi terbuku dalam hati tapi apabila pada hari ni terbaca blog seorang blogger, kesedihan saya bertambah dengan marah yang meluap-luap. Mangsa ditemui mati dalam keadaan hanya berseluar dalam di King Fisher Ujana.

Mangsa yang bernama Annie John Dismas sepatutnya menghadiri kelas di OUM pada hari Sabtu tapi mangsa tidak balik-balik. Mangsa ada lagi telefon ahli keluarga pada jam 3 dan masih sempat memberikan miskol dengan tunang mangsa lebih kurang jam 7.30 p.m. Pada jam 2 am, barulah kereta mangsa di jumpai di Australia Place dekat dengan Hotel Garden. Bapa mangsa terpaksa memecahkan cermin kereta untuk mencari apa-apa tanda kehilangan. Yang dijumpai adalah resit pembelian dari Kompleks Karamunsing yang menunjukkan yang mangsa ada shopping di sana lebih kurang jam 5 p.m.

Bila akhirnya ditemui, mangsa sudah meninggal dalam keadaan yang hanya berseluar dalam. Punyalah saya marah dan sedih benda begini berlaku. Siapalah penjahat yang tidak fikir kalau benda yang berlaku dengan kakak atau adik atau mama atau saudara-saudara dia sendiri, apa dia rasa?!

Saya ingin melafazkan salam simpati saya kepada keluarga, tunang, saudara-mara dan kawan-kawan mangsa dan berdoa untuk kalian semua. Tuhan memerhatikan kesedihan dan kemarahan kamu semua dan Dia tidak akan berdiam diri. Satu kehilangan yang sangat mencabar kesabaran dan kemanusiaan kita. Marah, dendam, sedih, kesal etc semua menjadi satu. Bukan senang kejadian macam ini diterima dan mestilah menjadi satu tamparan maha hebat sakitnya kepada semua orang yang mengenali si mati apalagi keluarga, tunang, saudara-mara dan kawan-kawan mendiang sendiri. Saya tidak dapat bayangkan semua rasa yang diorang rasa. Sakit hati yang teramat sangat! Tapi saya tidak akan cakap semuanya akan menjadi ok nanti sebab tiada yang ok dengan hal yang begini dan saya juga tidak akan cakap setiap benda yang berlaku ada sebabnya sebab, minta maaf, saya tidak nampak sebab kenapa ada orang yang patut mati dibunuh dengan keadaan kejam seperti ini. Sedih sangat-sangat.

Kepada penjenayah keparat itu, iya, ketawa-ketawalah kau di sana. Kau fikirlah yang kau selamat. Kau fikirlah nafsu syaitan terkutuk kau tu. Iya, puaslah hati kau kan. Satu hari nanti, kau akan rasa apa yang berlaku dengan mangsa itu sendiri. Saya tidak akan cakap hal yang sama akan berlaku dengan kakak kau, dengan adik kau, dengan mama kau atau saudara-saudara kau sebab saya fikir benda macam tu, janganlah berlaku disebabkan kesalahan kau sendiri yang kau sudah buat. Tapi suatu hari nanti, kau akan mendapat kesusahan yang kau sendiri akan tahu apa sebabnya. Laknat, tidak tenang hidup kau binatang terkutuk tidak pakai otak fikir, bodah dan sial!

Kau akan dapat balasan yang lebih teruk, lebih dasyat, lebih buruk, lebih parah! Kau tidak percaya? Kau tidak akan tenang seumur hidup kau. Kau tunggulah, kerabat syaitan!

Pengalaman Duduk IELTS

Kalau mau cakap, saya bukanlah manusia paling baik di dunia ni tapi sekurang-kurangnya saya sentiasa cuba untuk berbuat baik dengan orang lain; sekurang-kurangnya, saya fikir begitulah. Tapi kadang-kadang, bila kita sudah buat baik dengan orang tapi macam tidak dihargai pula. Malu jugalah terhegeh-hegeh offer bantuan tapi yalah, ada ketika dia yang apa yang kita cuba buat itu disalahtafsir. Tidak apa, yang penting kita ikhlas. Saya ikhlas.

Biarlah tu benda tu. Yang saya mau cerita ni kali pasal saya ambil exam IELTS (International English Language Test System) hujung minggu baru-baru ni. Tujuan saya, mungkin mau sambung study atau kali saja-saja mau test diri sendiri, hahaha. Persediaan ala kadar saja. Kerja sambil belajar ni lain sikit mainan dia. Terkena lagi minggu sebelum tu kerja banyak sikit jadi masa belajar pun kurang. Jadi, ni IELTS yang saya ambil ni under British Council dan dibuat di Le Meridien Hotel. Ada 4 bahagian semua ni paper ni. Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Adinah, yang listening paling tough saya rasalah. Bukan sebab slang dia British tapi tu nombor telefon bah saya tidak dapat tangkap habis bila dia cakap. Satu kali saja dia sebut tu nombor bah, huhu.. Terus saya down ni bila tidak dapat tangkap tu nombor telefon. Baru soalan kedua tu. Tapi saya cepat-cepat sedar yang saya perlu kasi motivasi sama diri sendiri sebab banyak lagi soalan-soalan yang bakal saya jawab nanti. Orang putih cakap, pull yourself together kunu ah saya. Baiklah.

Bahagian kedua itu reading. Nasib saya suka membaca jadi tidak berapa banyak masalah di sinilah. Kali ok jugalah ni bahagian ni, tapi nda taulah kan. Yang ketiga writing. Hmm.. Ni pun macam biasa-biasa jugalah saya buat. Nda juga pandai betul ni tapi bolehla kali kampung-kampung tu, hahaha. Yang bahagian keempat ni yang bikin lawak bila saya ingat balik tau. Speaking bah. Jadi, saya ada baca-bacalah kunun tips-tips speaking ni terus saya ter'highlight' ni phrase 'speak until the examiner ask you to stop'... Nah, apalagi, saya belasah sajala jawapan saya. Mula-mula kana kasi warming up tanya-tanya nama, kerja, asal. Nah, sekali dia tanya "describe what you are wearing today" bilang, di sanalah saya terstop 2 saat kali tu. Sebab saya betul-betul tidak sangka soalan macam tu dia tanya. Bah, saya pun teruslah kunun bercakap ni, baju begini begitu, jeans begini begitu. Ada jaket bikin saya kasi panas-panas badan pun, saya cakap saja ni. Sikit lagi saya mahu tambah pasal underwear juga ni (examiner saya perempuan Chinese tapi slang UK ok dan boleh tahan juga orang dia ni) tapi nda jadi sebab tiba-tiba dia angkat tangan dia bagi saya sign 'talk to the hand' ah. OMG ni saya rasa. Malu betul ni. Kana stop time-time ko siok bercakap ni. Aduh. Merah kali muka saya tu. Saya ingat bila kena suruh stop, dia interupt terus. Ni kana bagi tu sign depan-depan muka ko. Waka waka eh eh betul ah... huhu.

Then dia tanya pasal childhood hobby sama hobby sekarang ini. Menjadi Ned seperti biasa, bercakaplah saya tanpa henti dan ni perempuan selalu interupt saya dengan tanya soalan-soalan berdasarkan jawapan yang saya bagi. Di sinilah saya terlupa satu perkataan ah. Saya tidak tahu kenapa saya buli lupa tu. Ada bah di hujung-hujung otak saya tapi saya tidak dapat recall ni. Kamu tahu apa tu perkataan, 'gadgets' ah. Kan dia tanya saya pasal hobby, jadi saya jawablah photography dan saya mo describe itu camera sebagai satu gadget tapi saya lost word betul tu masa. Jadi, terima kasih kerana sudah membaca tips-tips speaking, saya tahulah saya perlu cari satu perkataan yang dekat-dekat maksud dia, terus saya dapat perkataan 'tools'. Nasib lagi owh. Dekat-dekat juga bah kan maksud dia tukan. Aduh... nervous bah saya tu...

Makin lama, makin cepat dia bercakap terus saya pun apalagi, teruslah kunu saya bercakap dan banyak kalilah tu sign 'talk to the hand' kana angkat. Mula-mula malu tapi bila sudah panas-panas, bantai saja apa yang boleh dicakap, hahaha.

Jadi, entahlah tu macamana kan. Tapi at least saya sudah buat yang terbaik dengan usaha sebagai persediaan dan apapun keputusan dia, saya terimalah dengan hati yang terbuka. Mahalba juga ni exam ni mahu ambil. RM570 ah jadi mahu tidak mahu, kenalah usaha sikit-sikit. Saya bukan mau minta puji ni ah. Setakat sharing saja. Saya ni bukanlah pandai sangat tapi orang bilang, kita belajar palan-palan.

Jadi, kepada kawan-kawan yang ada plan mahu ambil ini test, kalau kamu perlu tips, janganlah malu-malu tanya saya. Saya bukanlah cakap saya ni bagus tapi adalah kunu pengalaman ambil ni test jadi kira ada idea sikitlah kan. Oh ya, keputusan dia keluar 22 Oct ni. Saya rileks-rileks sajalah tunggu ni kan... Aduh... huhu

There Goes 'Save Atkinson'

Yes, the tower had been left out for so long time now and abandoned of the concern of the public. And yes, not until recently this had awaken the people on this particular site when announced that a massive project will be carried out in which will, in every where, 'damaged' the tower. But it's a lesson worth learning and maybe after this, people will start appreciating heritages in this land. But is it too late?

Nevertheless, a 16-storey structures? By truest fact, we don't need more shopping complexes. A hotel, maybe yes, but is that really necessary to build it there? Moving and developing? Try upgrading the public transportation or educating people not to spit around? Or the PTIs? Traffic towards Papar every morning and sundown? The food price? OMG!

The singular statement of Kota Kinabalu being a Taman Peranginan Semulajadi (a Nature Resort City) contradicted with this exact development. How can nature resort be defined when there's not 'enough' green to be looked at? How about the long term effects of erecting gigantic structure in the higher ground? The habitat of the birds, animals, insects, ghosts perhaps?

Yes, we are just sitting and saying this. Or is it? If the Atkinson Tower were to be 'demolished' or by height reduced, then clap our hands people. At least, it's an education for us. Maybe then we can better cherish Karamunsing Complex - the oldest shopping mall in KK, or CP - the mature shopping complex or Wisma Merdeka, or the quarter full of Suria KK. 1B?

Then what's the use of us, of me, to even bother 'debating' when I myself could only see and jot? I can't do anything. But wait, I've proposed picketing, nobody listens. I proposed photoshoot, nobody cares. But every time I logged on, I see new faces with new comments, some confusing statements, skeptics, sarcastic debate of facts with nothing but just mere words!

What are we trying to prove?

Save Atkinson Tower Now!

One of the most durable landmarks in Kota Kinabalu and notably on a bluff along Signal Hill Road neighbouring to the old Police Station, stands The Atkinson Tower. This all-wood, no-nails structure was built commencing 1902 (some says it 1903) but was fully uprighted in 1905, by Mary Edith Atkinson in memory of her son, Francis George Atkinson the popular first District Officer of Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) during the British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration, who had succumbed to Malaria at the young age of 28.

Apart from that, it was formerly used as a navigation aid for ships until it was overshadowed by taller buildings as in today. These days, this memorial has the peculiarity of being the oldest standing construction in the whole of Sabah that survived the air invasions and bombardment of World War II. Till today, it still dole out to keep the city's time.

But dated 22^nd September 2010 wrote, “The 105-year old Atkinson Tower will be reduced to an 18ft midget if a proposed 16-storey shopping mall-hotel project goes ahead at the foot of Signal Hill” (Source)

I say what?! Come on people, we are talking the oldest structure in KK and now they want to reduce its height? Where’s the proud in that? Let’s fight for Atkinson Tower people. We can express our disapproval in whatever means but unless we take serious action, and I mean ACTION, we are just going to watch them alter Atkinson.

Just don’t stand there, do something. Distributing brochures, blogging, picketing, updating Facebook status, signatures to our CM, to the Mayor, to our MP; anything legal. Let our voices be heard! Save Atkinson Tower!

In case you guys didn't know, this book is soon to be a movie and the rights were bought by Steven Spielberg even before the book was published. Now that's a review!

Penat sedikit beberapa hari ini. Atau, sebenarnya memang penat setiap hari. Menghadap laptop, meeting dan berbual-bual kosong dengan kawan-kawan sekerja. Facebook jangan cakaplah. Ada saja masa terluang, mesti wajib update status. Tapi entah bila dapat update status single itu :p

Jadi, esok raya. Kota Marudu yang kecil ini tiba-tiba pack dengan ramai orang. Parking-parking penuh dan banyak kenderaan lalu-lalang, tidak seperti biasa. Begitu aura musim perayaan, apatah lagi bagi Hari Raya ini. Mereka yang berada di bandar mengambil peluang balik kampung dan merayakan Hari Raya dengan keluarga dan sanak saudara. Jangan saja lupa untuk lebih berhati-hati di jalanraya dan untuk semuanya. Perancangan teliti perlu ada agar tidak menganggu aktiviti yang sepatutnya.

Di sini, saya juga ingin mengambil kesempatan ini untuk mengucapkan Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri kepada semua rakan-rakan Muslim di Sabah khasnya, dan seluruh Malaysia amnya. Walaupun perayaan ini adalah perayaan Kemenangan masyarakat Islam tapi saya percaya semangat 1Malaysia menjadikan ianya juga perayaan masyarakat majmuk Malaysia kita.

Semoga Raya tahun ini lebih bermakna dan lebih mengajar kita semua tentang penghormatan, persaudaraan, persahabatan dan semangat kekitaan. ... silalah beri masa sedikit pun saja untuk meneliti perkara-perkara ini. Takut-takut nanti dikatakan tidak cukup sekolah dan ilmunya, malu sendiri lebih daripada berbogel tanpa seurat benang pun. Jadi begini, banyaklah cakap-cakap yang pedas di telinga dan mata contoh komen-komen hamba Tuhan kat sebelah kiri tu. Ketawa kejap bila menelusuri cakap-cakap yang megah penggunaan ayatnya tapi gagal daripada faktanya. Oleh itu, sukalah saya mengongsikan beberapa benda yang dapat memberi cahaya dan pendoman kepada saudara kita ini. Saya orang yang bagus-bagus dari mereka yang lebih bagus-bagus lagi; sangat tidak kisah memberi pertolongan ilmu dan berkongsi.

Sedia saudara? Tapi sebentar. Ini bukan tulisan menghina dina, atau berbalas-balas pantun. Ini sekadar luahan yang membela. Sudah lama rasanya mendiamkan diri tapi yang sana-sana lebih tidak 'reti' kalau begini, jadi saya sekali lagi, dengan sukarela ingin membantu yang di sana-sana, faham dan lebih kritis bila bercakap tentang negeri di bawah bayu ini.

Geografi (dieja sebagai G.E.O.G.R.A.F.I) takut kawan kita tu tak 'reti' apa itu Geografi sebab nampaknya, gagal sangat pengetahuanya bila memberi komen-komen begitu.

Mari kawan-kawan, kita highlight satu benda berdasarkan jadual ini.

Bila kita bercakap tentang sebuah rumah yang hanya ada satu bilik dengan sebuah rumah yang ada banyak bilik, rumah manakah yang lebih sukar penjagaannya? Bersyukurlah nak, rumah kamu di sana-sana kecil dan senanglah pengurusan maintenancenya. Yang ada di Sabah adalah 25 daerah yang bernaung di bawah satu nama; Sabah.

Wah, luasnya Sabah! Nombor dua luas di Malaysia selepas Sarawak. Jadi cuba lihat Interior Division, macam angka keluasannya sama dengan negeri perbandingan kawan kita tu kan? Sekali lagi, syukurlah nak. Keluasan negeri kamu memudahkan urusan pembangunan sebab tidak banyak bilik yang hendak dijaga. Jadi, iya, saya setuju Sabah ni, apalah yang ada sangatkan. Tapi rasanya, bila kita sedar akan perihal fakta yang begini, amatlah tidak logik jika mereka tetap membandingkan kedudukan mereka dengan kita. Rasanya geografi gagal sangatlah kan. Lepas ni, harap-harap dapat diperbaiki. Saya tidak kisah memberi tunjuk ajar dan menjadi kawan kamu sekiranya dengan cara ini dapat mem-belajar-kan kamu. Satu hari nanti, bila kamu beli rumah dan perlu melengkapkan rumah kamu, tengok-tengoklah berapa bilik yang harus kamu jaga. Takut tidak terjaga nanti. Bagi kami di sini, sudah biasa berdiri di atas kaki sendiri dan semua sedar tanggungjawab menjaga sesama sendiri. Kami mungkin di belakang sedikit. Tapi kami tidak statik. Kami sedang bergerak. Tidak laju tapi sedang maju.

Kemenjadian sesebuah tempat kepada status bandar juga wahai saudara, bukan hanya disebabkan saiz kawasan bandarnya tapi juga mengambil kira jumlah penduduk serta taraf ekonomi, sosial dan politik sesebuah tempat. Seperti yang saya katakan, Sabah ini besar; mencakup lebih daripada setengah daripada Tanah Semenanjung sendiri. Di mana kita belajar ni? Geografi Tingkatan 1? Tingkatan 2? Tingkatan 3?

1Malaysia?
Sempena kedatangan Bulan Syawal yang mulia ini, jemput-jemputlah datang ke rumah. Mari kita lihat berapa kaum dan bangsa dan keturunan dan bahasa dan agama yang berbumbung di bawah satu rumah, bergurau senda sambil makan-makan kuih makmur (mamur), batang buruk dan ketupat rendang? Dan ala-ala apa masakan yang ada? 1Malaysia? Silalah datang sendiri ke Sabah, tempat orang-orang yang dikatakan masih tinggal di atas pokok. Terukkan? Menonton World Cup dari dahan-dahan pokok yang kecil-kecil dan mahu patah. Macam manalah tu? Stacy Juara AF6 tu berlatih menari di dahan-dahan yang kuat sedikit supaya bila dia lompat sana dan sini, tidaklah jatuh tersemban sampai patah kaki dan tangan dan tulang rusuk. Berapa etnik yang ada di Sabah? Ya betul, yang paling hampir adalah 32 etnik. Pendek kata, datang dan lihatlah sendiri apa maksud 1Malaysia di negeri di bawah bayu ini. Tidak kisah bila dicop masih tinggal di atas pokok, atau gua-gua. Sebab mengikut saya, pokok-pokok itu menyokong keperibadian yang saling menghormati, saling menyayangi dan saling memperlengkapkan antara satu sama yang lain. Saya rasa kawan-kawan di sana pun begitukan? Eh, tidakkah? Hmm...

Wah, syukurlah lagi nak. Banyak shopping complex di sana. Mesti banggakan. Hehehe.. Sini pun ada juga. Kira banyak jugalah. Boleh surf internet sendiri juga. Tapi takut-takut cuma yang branded yang dicari, wah, banyak sangat duit. Derma-dermalah dengan fakir miskin. Kurang sikit azab dosa menghina. Cermin-cermin muka tu dulu, manatau, nampak tahi mata orang lain tapi tahi mata sendiri, tidak pula disedari. Lepas ni, saya mahu beli cermin yang grand-grand besarnya, biar nampak satu badan dan hadiahkan kepada kamu. Banyak sangat duit tapi cermin gagal. Tapi tidak mengapa tu, saya tolong belikan. Banyak sangat orang yang di neraka tu, janganlah kamu menambahkan sempitnya lagi.

Sekali lagi nak, bersyukurlah banyak-banyak lagi sebab ada highway kelas-kelas di sana. Perjalanan tambah mudah. Tapi jangan laju-laju. Macam lebih banyak kes kemalangan di jalan yang lurus daripada jalan yang bengkok-bengkok macam di Sabah ni. Top-up kad-kad tol selalu. Nanti tidak ter'limpas' di tol-tol jalanranya nanti. Amalkan yoga atau dengar muzik-muzik santai. Atau saya cadangkan tinggal saja di rumah. Takut darah tinggi tunggu traffic jam. Stress dan tension.

Iya, balik-balik Pulau Sipadan, pulau tercantik di dunia itu. Balik-balik Gunung Kinabalu, gunung tertinggi di Asia Tenggara. Balik-balik Pulau Mabul yang wah, sunsetnya mengegarkan jiwa. Tapi kamu adakah begitu?!

Dan terima kasih banyak-banyak kepada warga pendidik, warga-warga keselamatan dan semualah yang datangnya dari sana, berkhidmat di sini. Saya cukup sedar, tidak semua suka dan tidak semua redha tapi pasrah dalam keterpaksaan. Tuhan sajalah yang dapat membalas budi baik dan khidmat yang telah anda curahkan. Minta maaflah. Ada tempat yang memang tiada internet access. Ada juga tempat-tempat tu yang terlalu jauh, hanya boleh dicapai dengan jalan balak atau sampan-sampan. Selain dapat elaun yang banyak dan menjadikan diri kaya setelah beberapa bulan tidak keluar, saudara dan saudari juga mengumpul dana di bank amal kerana khidmat anda telah menjadikan manusia lebih manusia. Satu hari nanti, ketika anda terpaksa beratur di bank, atau terkena saman pandu laju kerana bergegas balik ke rumah akibat sakit perut dan perlu ke tandas dengan kadar segera, harap-harap, mereka-mereka yang kita jumpa itu adalah anak didik kita, individu yang kita pernah tolong dan anak-anak jiran kita yang comel-comel memanjat pokok jambu di belakang rumah yang kita sempat nasihat kan"turun, kalau jatuh nanti susah..." Dunia sepertinya tidak adil. Tapi Tuhan adil. Sangat adil. Satu hari nanti, anda boleh berbangga dan mengatakan "saya pernah berkhidmat di Sabah dan membantu mereka..." Terima kasih banyak-banyak, untuk kesekian kalinya.

Kawan-kawan, masing-masing kita ada pengalaman yang mengeramkan hati dan perasaan kita bila, dalam sudut-sudut tertentu kita seperti dipijak. Percayalah, saya juga berasa yang sama. Bukan maksud saya mengapi-apikan perkauman, sekadar membela negeri saya. Kalau saya terkena ISA sebab tulisan ini, maka, saya bangga kerana saya pernah tampil untuk berkongsi pandangan saya mengenai komen-komen kawan kita melalui keratan facebook di atas. Sekadar ingin membantu beliau faham kedudukan Sabah yang telah disalahfahamkan dalam sudut fikirnya.

Dan saya percaya, komen-komen kawan kita itu tidak mewakili semua orang yang ada di sana. Kawan-kawan lain yang di sana, mohon jangan tersinggung. Maksud saya jelas untuk memperbetulkan salah tafsir kawan dengan komen-komen di atas itu. Kita tetap 1Malaysia. Baik buruk kita, tetap 1Malaysia.

Apapun, sebagai rakyat Sabah, kita janganlah membalas komen-komen kawan kita itu dengan mengeluar perkataan-perkataan yang berunsurkan negatif dan tidak akademi. Saya faham kita marah tapi dengan mengeluarkan perkataan dan ayat sedemikian, kita hanya mewar-warkan kelemahan kita.

Akhir untuk kali ini, kepada kawan kita itu, kenapa, kenapa Sabah kamu buruk-burukkan? Kami tidak pernah pun memburukkan kamu. Kamu betul-betul tidak sedarkan, Malaysia adalah sebuah rumah dengan bilik yang banyak. Kalau kamu bakar salah satu bilik tu, kamu akan bakar 1 Malaysia ni!

Winner Miss Universe 2010

After back to back winner from Venezuela, a new country walked with the Miss Universe Crown. Jimena Navarrete, Miss Mexico, has been crowned Miss Universe 2010 and they are surely celebrating in Mexico tonight. The top four runner ups were Venus Raj Miss Phillipines, Anna Poslavska Miss Ukraine, Jesinta Campbell Miss Australia and Yendi Phillips Miss Jamaica.

The Top 15 were: Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Ukraine, Miss Mexico, Miss Belgium, Miss Ireland, Miss South Africa, Miss France, Miss Australia, Miss Jamaica, Miss Russia, Miss Albania, Miss Colombia, Miss Guatemala, Miss Czech Republic and Miss Philippines. Although Miss Philippines got the loudest cheer and applause when she was called in the semi-final round but the crown went to Miss Mexico eventually.

Other awards given were Miss Congeniality going to Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, with Miss Photogenic going to Miss Thailand, and Miss Thailand also won the Best National Costume Award.

Congratulation Mexico!
