Mat Salleh and Sharif Osman's graves in Kota Marudu?

Really? I don't know for sure but I came across this article as I was browsing the internet just now. Mat Salleh in Kota Marudu? I've heard about Sharif but Mat Salleh? Hmm... Whatever it is, I hope they're right. Yalah, at least orang akan lebih kenal Kota Marudu, kalau betulla. Saya kan orang Kota Marudu and erm, Tampuruli jugalah... eh, dua2lah.... hehehehe...

Tracing Mat Salleh’s lineage with DNA
13th May, 2008

KOTA MARUDU: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun has commended a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lecturer who is using DNA testing to identify descendants of the legendary 19th century resistance fighter Mat Salleh, saying the effort would contribute greatly to research into local history.

“We know that today’s technologies are already advanced, making it easier to compile a list of Mat Salleh’s descendants, and this will surely add to knowledge of the rich history of the people here,” he said, adding the legendary warrior “fought for Sabah.”

The half-Bajau half-Suluk rebel fought against the British North Borneo Company in the late 19th century, and it is learnt that several agencies are involved in locating his burial site, believed by some to be in Kampung Langkon Baru near here.

Masidi said he has asked the district council to identify the historical sites related to Mat Salle, adding he would approve funds for the district council to do restoration work on any historical site related to the warrior.

“When the restoration is completed it will not only be an important site but also another tourism attraction in the state,” he said.

A resident of Langkon Baru told New Sabah Times that the grave of Sharif Osman, another rebel who fought against the British colonial administration, is also believed to be located in the village.
